US Senate’s Foreign Policy Committee has already supported the ratification of Montenegro-NATO Accession Protocol and there is no indication that the US administration will not support this process, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
Asked whether he talked to US President Donald Trump about Montenegro and whether Tramp formally announced that he would sign the ratification, Stoltenberg called in mind that the Senate has to ratify the protocol.
“There is no indication that the US administration does not support the ratification. The ratification has a strong, unequivocal support in the Senate. Foreign Policy Committee has already supported it and I think this is a good path of the United States. I cannot speak on behalf of the Senate, because it is a sovereign parliament of a NATO member state,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference ahead of a meeting of defence ministers which begins on Wednesday.
Stoltenberg called into mind that 24 NATO member states ratified the protocol.
“There are four member states to do the same and I cannot say when this will happen. I hope as soon as possible, but parliaments are sovereign and they will decide on their own when they will make that decision. But I think this is a good chance that Montenegro will become NATO member state relatively soon,” he said.
