“We strongly recommend political decision-makers to carefully consider the harmful message they will send to Euro-Atlantic partners if they elect a prime minister and, subsequently, form a government based on a law whose compliance with the Constitution is highly questionable and which the Venice Commission advised not to implement”, says a joint statement of the special envoy of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the Western Balkans, Lord Stuart Peach, and the special representative of the German federal government for the countries of the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, who are staying in Montenegro today.
They have emphasized that the United Kingdom and Germany continue to strongly support the Euro-Atlantic orientation of Montenegro and its efforts to join the European Union. At the same time, they have pointed out that they are worried about the long-term political crisis, blocked institutions, the increasing polarization of society in Montenegro and the apparent inability of political decision-makers to find a way out of this crisis.
They also point out that they believe that the best means to “overcome the current political impasse and put the future of Montenegro in the hands of its people again would be parliamentary elections, which should be held as soon as possible, after the Constitutional Court resumes its work.
