The acting director of the Police Directorate, Lazar Scepanovic, has called on the citizens to, as soon as possible, hand over the weapons they have in their illegal possession, without legal consequences.

According to him, during the whole of last year, Police Directorate officers carried out a series of preventive proactive measures and actions, with the aim of finding weapons in illegal possession, and on that occasion over 1,100 firearms were confiscated in Montenegro, while in the campaign Respect Life – Return the Weapons, the citizens returned 209 weapons.

Cetinje resident Aco Martinovic, who killed 12 innocent citizens two days ago, including two children, and wounded four people, was previously prosecuted for illegal possession of weapons.

In his possession at the end of November 2022, the police found two air rifles, 43 bullets of different calibers, one large improvised explosive device of great destructive power and a set for cleaning firearms.

According to the data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 68,000 citizens are legally armed in Montenegro. They own over 100,000 weapons. On the other hand, when it comes to illegal weapons, it is estimated that citizens have at least 40,000 or even more than 100,000 weapons in illegal possession.
