Traffic cops often catch teens driving cars, but the CdM portal couldn’t find out how often because, as they said, they don’t do a registry of the age of misdemeanour perpetrators agains road traffic safety. However, from time to time the police do send the information whenever traffic cops catch under-18 drivers.
CdM asked the National Police how many teenagers they caught driving cars this and last year, whether some of them were driving under the influence of drink and drugs, how the police planned to curb such behaviour on the Montenegrin roads and whether penalties would be stricter, but didn’t get the answer by the time of publication.
“The National Police don’t keep the records on the age structure of the perpetrators of traffic offences, so we don’t have these data. This type of data – the records by age – is being kept for those involved in car accidents,” they state.
When it comes to penalties, they note that they have proposed the amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety which would increase fines for the perpetrators of traffic offences, taking into account a large number of persistent offenders. This, according to them, indicates that existing fines are not high enough.
Police also add they would continue implementing the activities on raising awareness when it comes to traffic culture through preventive activities and the realization of various campaigns.
