Port Bar is getting ready for the storage of natural gas

CEO of the Port Bar, Mr Vladan Vučelić, says that plans are afoot for the development of the Terminal for natural gas, which would, essentially, contribute to increasing existing port capacities, volume of transshipment and revenues not only for the Port bit for all subjects involved in the process of providing port services.

In the interview for Dan, Mr Vučelić pointed out that the Port had drawn up Action plan containing measures that should result in optimal application of the principle of sustainable development in the Port area, putting emphasis on the development of transshipment capacities and storage of liquid natural gas.

DN: American sub-secretary for fossil fuels, Mr Steven Vinberg, said that Montenegro could become energy hub for distribution of natural gas from the USA. What would that mean for the Port, for Bar and for Montenegro and its economy?

Mr VUČELIĆ: Spatial and plan documentation for the area of the port envisages development of the Terminal for liquid natural gas, with 2 hectares of surface area, whose main elements would be the following: reservoirs, pumps, pipes, safety systems etc.

Therefore, construction of the Terminal for liquid natural gas is one of the Port’s development projects and its implementation would contribute to increase in the volume of transshipment and revenues not only for the Port but also for all subjects involved in the process of providing port services.

This project has one special dimension: it’s in accordance with global trends related to achievement of sustainable development goals concerning reduction of harmful gases emission.

Within SUPAIR international project, the Port has drawn up Action plan which contains measures that should result in optimal application of sustainable development principle.

DN: Have you already discussed the subject related to acceptance of ships carrying natural gas from the USA to other countries in the world?

Mr VUČELIĆ: Yes, we have. Mr Vinberg visited the Port on 6 February. He got acquainted with the current situation and development plans. His initial impressions were very positive.

DN: Does the port dispose of enough capacities to become energy hub for distribution of natural gas from the USA or maybe it requires additional investment?

Mr VUČELIĆ: I’ve already stressed that spatial plan documentation envisages development of terminals for liquid natural gas. That fact determines initial potentials that could lead to bringing the transshipment and storage of gas to optimal level.

There are different models for the development of terminals: either the Port will invest in the project by itself, or it will be some sort of partnership or some other model.

Anyway, the model of the implementation of the project will be rights and responsibilities outlined in the Annex IV to the agreement on the use of coastal property.
