It is already certain that price increases are expected as of the New Year, which will certainly threaten the already poor standard of living of the citizens. For now, Podgorica Public Cleaning Services and Water and Sewerage have announced an increase in the prices of their services from 1 January 2024. Yesterday, the President of the Board of Directors of Montenegro’s power supplier, EPCG, Milutin Djukanovic, announced that the company would analyze the situation and consider an increase in the price of electricity as of January.
Montenegro’s power distribution system, CEDIS, submitted a request for price correction.
Djukanovic pointed out that by maintaining current electricity prices, while all other prices were rising, citizens and companies saved more than €1bn in the previous period. He claims that the electricity price increase will not significantly affect the citizens.
Citizens of Montenegro can expect higher fuel prices in the coming period as well. The intensity of the price increase will depend on the decisions of the crude oil producing countries.
According to farmers, a new increase in the price of agricultural products is certain in the coming period as well, and this is a consequence of bad weather and the African swine fever that hit the region in the summer months. Montenegro, as an import-dependent country, will hardly be able to prevent the new inflationary blow that is being announced.
DPS recently presented a package of measures that the party will send to the Government in order to protect the living standard of citizens.
Consumer prices from 1 January to 31 August 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year, were on average higher by 10.1%.
