The Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro received several reports yesterday about hatching of young sea turtles, most likely the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) – the most common species of sea turtle in the Adriatic. Although scientists have been predicting the possibility of loggerhead turtles to use Long Beach (Velika plaza) to lay their eggs, this is the first such documented case, the Institute of Marine Biology has announced.

The institute also explains that over the past few years the nesting range expansion of loggerhead turtles was recorded, with the hotspots for nesting detected in the Northern Adriatic Coast of Italy as well.
“For now, this is the northernmost recorded case on the eastern coast of the Adriatic so far. We wish to warn the public that all species of sea turtles are protected, both in national and international legislation,” the institute stated.
