Railway Transport appears to be uninterested in cyclists’ needs

If cyclists want to take their bike on a train, they are obliged to pay €4. Apart from the high price, cyclists are disappointed at not having enough space where they can park their bikes.

“Ticket prices in local railway transport are not too high, but for bikes, they’re just exaggerated. Trains aren’t equipped properly for bikes”, said Mr Dejan Topčević, representatives of NGO, Biciklo.me

This NGO has been trying to urge Railway Transport to make the bike railway transport price policy more reasonable.

“Our members, tourists and others have been complaining about bike tickets price. €4 that you are supposed to pay is not in accordance with the level of service you get”, said Mr Topčević.

The NGO has initiated initiative on the reduction of prices two times so far but it failed every time.

“We won’t quit, though. We are going to launch that initiative once again”, said Mr Topčević.

Spaces for bicycles on trains are woefully inadequate. They are usually placed at the end of the last wagon, blocking the toilet entrance.

Mr Dušan Masoničić, a cyclist, agrees that bike tickets are exceedingly expensive.

“It’s too much. There are no spaces for bikes. If I pay €4, I expect to find a place where my bike is going to be safe. I don’t expect to be standing somewhere at the end of wagon and monitoring my bike”, said Mr Masoničić.

He thinks that a €2 price would be acceptable.

“Or, since this is an ecological country, it should be free of charge”, says Mr Masoničić.

Bike railway transportation price is determined by passenger tariff established in 2008. A price of €4 applies to one-seat bicycles, weighing 20 kg.

“Passenger trains allow for bike transport. Those travelling with bicycles must pay additionally for their bikes”, said the Railway Transport spokesperson, Ms Amina Murić.

Representatives of Railway Transport of Montenegro didn’t want to answer if they would consider reduction in ticket prices for bike transport on trains.

In Serbia for instance, a passenger pays less than €1 for taking bike on train.
