Rakočević: Barbed wire’s not our style

As Europe tries to curb the refugee crisis, it’s still unknown to which extent it is going to hit the Western Balkans (WB). The European Union (EU) seems to be more and more determined in its decision to bring the WB into the refugee scheme.

Montenegro will be part of the so-called ‘Balkan migrant route’ and it plans to establish the reception center near its border with Albania.

Media previously reported that our country intends to put a razor-wire fence along the border with Albania. According to criminologist Velimir Rakočević, putting a barbed-wire fence is not our style.

“That’s definitely not our style. We have never done so and we should not. Ever! I think that our country’s position represents the right solution corresponding to human values. Montenegro has the international reputation of being an open country willing to assist. I definitely believe we should continue with such a practice. Of course, we should bear in mind the national interests. In case the migrant influx goes beyond our capacities and possibilities, there are other mechanisms for protection of crucial interests,” said Rakočević.

“As for the migrant reception center along the border with Albania, it represents a temporary solution and I hereby urge the countries to show solidarity and commit to their international obligations,” Rakočević clearly stated.

The flood of migrants in Europe represents one of the world’s greatest challenges and it will be the topic for discussion of the EU expert mission, which is to come to Montenegro on 25 June.
