Daniel Serwer, professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, told Pobjeda that US VP message to opposition to return to Parliament was expected. Americans do not approve boycotting parliament since it is counter-productive, the expert for Balkans said. According to him, opposition is important factor in democracy, but it is supposed to present its views within institutions.
He explained historic importance of Pence’s visit.
“The visit was very good. He conveyed a clear message of President Donald Trump’s administration that it was committed to NATO values and against inappropriate Russia’s behaviour in the Balkans. It was a clear signal: the alliance’s door is open for those who are willing and qualified to join it,” Serwer said.
He warns that Moscow will not give up on Montenegro.
“Moscow has given Montenegro and many other countries good reasons to be loyal to NATO instead of Russia, which is a declining regional power. Russia can offer only destruction to the region,” Serwer said.
