Author of the article “Is Monenegro the 29th member of NATO” Julian Barnes reminded of the opinions of some NATO members that inviting Montenegro to the Alliance would be a way of opposing the Russian agression in the region, showing that the door of the Alliance remain open”, it was reported by Dnevne novine.
He also reminded of the last week’s interview of Jens Stoltenberg, general secretary of NATO, who said that he won’t speak in advance about the membership, but he praised Montenegro for changes it had made in its efforts to become a member.
“Montenegro is making progress in the area of rule of law, fight against corruption and also modernization of its military”, said Stoltenberg.
Author of the article concluded that in time of growing Russian agression which is trying to expand its influence on Balkans, it’s an imperative for NATO to confirm its support to the region, primarily to Montenegro.
The Wall Street Journal reported that many US officials are willing to invite Montenegro in NATO, in order to show that Moscow doesn’t have a factual veto on further expansion of the Alliance.
Stoltenberg said that fundamental principle of the Alliance is that every nation can decide for itself part of which security network it wants to be.
